TTD often suggests using stop buy orders to enter. It is very important to buy a breakout stock as close as possible to the breakpoint. The idea is to get "elbow room" if the stock should follow through to the upside. This is very important in being successful in making big money with breakout stocks.

It is also essential to have a stop loss strategy for all stocks in which positions are taken. Not every stock will work as expected. It is important for investors to "police" their portfolios and avoid getting trapped in any bad positions.

Timely Breakout Stocks From Tape Action

(The “breakout List” gives all stocks breaking out of a base of five weeks or more. These stocks have a good chance to trend higher. However, a stop should be used to avoid those that do not work.

They are ranked according to percentage change and classified as leaders or other.

(Trading strategy: One should buy breakout stocks near breakpoint by using market order or stop buy.  They can also be bought soon after a follow through move, sometimes on an intraday pullback. )

      TTD's Quality Rating of Stock - MXL  - ABOVE AVERAGE

  MXL, based in Carlsbad, Ca., sells mixed-signal integrated circuits. Annual revenues: $479 million. MXL's stock drives sharply higher Thursday and breaks out from its six-week, flat base.

  So far today, MXL is trading a heavy 2 million shares, five times its average daily volume of 413,000 shares.

  TTD sees more on the upside.

  TTD featured MXL as a breakout at our midsession video show on the Web.

  MXL reported net for the third quarter of 53 cents a share topping the Street estimate of 50 cents a share.

  MXL's stock spiked higher in the morning and cleared its breakpoint line.

  The stock reached an intraday high of $49.44 in the morning.

  The stock then trended sideways the rest of the day.

  MXL was unchanged in after-hours trading.

   Tape Action

  MXL's tape action shows the recent block trades.

  One can see the price for the blocks climbing from $42.88 in the prior session to as high as $48.91 later in the afternoon.

  Near the close a big block of 123,852 shares crossed at $48.15.

  That was up sharply from the prior block at $47.43 on 6,400 shares.     


  MXL sells radio frequency and mixed-signal integrated circuits for cable and satellite broadband communications.

 The company's RF receiver products capture and process digital and analog broadband signals to be decoded for various applications.

It sells its products to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), module makers and original design manufacturers (ODMs).


  MXL's 12-month performance chart shows the stock up 85% versus a 36% gain for the stock market.

  Insiders were recent buyers at $13.61 to $12.17 a share using stock options.

  They were sellers at $23.97 to $37 a share.

  MXL's long-term chart shows the stock rising from $12.67 in 2016 to a peak at $32 by 2017.

 The stock then went into a long-term base and in early 2020 fell to $7.79 due to the stock market's decline.

  However, MXL turned and rallied aggressively to a peak at $49.44.

  MXL's daily chart shows the stock climbing from $32 in May to a peak near $43 by July.

  The stock put down a flat base and now breaks out with a gap move and a widening of the daily spread.

  That is very bullish.

  The stock's CCI momentum indicator is strongly bullish.

   Earnings Outlook

 This year, analysts project a big 136% leap in net to $2.08 a share from the 88 cents the prior year.

  The highest estimate for the year is at $2.10 a share.

Five analysts follow the stock.

  The stock has price-earnings ratio of 23.

 Looking out to 2022, the Street predicts a 13% rise in net to $2.36 a share from the $2.08 expected this year.

  Quarterly earnings will be strong.

  Net for the third quarter should jump 44% to 46 cents a share from the 32 cents the year before.

  Then in the fourth quarter net should leap 46% to 57 cents a share from the 39 cents the prior year.

Strategy Opinion:  TTD is targeting MXL for a move to $58 within the next few months, or sooner.

A protective stop can be placed near $45.

Intermediate-Term Rating: Average.

Lowers Year Net Forecast, TTD Sees Drop to 85

  CTXS, based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., provides networkng and cloud computer solutions. Annual revenues: $3.2 billion. CTXS's stock falls sharply Thursday and undercuts key technical support.

  The company lowered its earnings forecast for the year.

  TTD sees more on the downside.

  CTXS volume swelled to 9.9 million shares, 10 times its average daily volume of 855,000 shares.

  TTD highlighted CTXS as a short at our midsession video show on the Web Thursday.

  CTXS's stock fell sharply in the morning and undercut key technical support.

  The stock touched an intraday low of $94.66.

  The stock then bounced up to around $99 and trended sideways the rest of the day.

  In after-hours trading, CTXS was down 68 cents a share.

   Tape Action

  CTXS's tape action shows the recent block trades.

  One can see the price for the blocks falling from $114.71 in the prior session to as low as $95.13 in the morning.

  A key bearish trade came in the morning when a block of 100,000 shares crossed at $95.16.

  That was down from  the prior block the day before at $114.55 on 122,095 shares.


  CTXS's products include cloud services solutions and maintenance and support.

 The company's NetScaler nCore Technology is an architecture that enables execution of multiple packet engines in parallel.

 Its workspace services include application virtualization and virtual desktop infrastructure, enterprise mobility management and citrix workspace suite.

The company's netScaler ADC is a software-defined application delivery controller. 


  CTXS cut its annual earnings estimate to $4.75 to $4.95 a share. That was down from the Street estimate of $5.73 a share.

  For the third quarter, the Street expects a 1% decline in net to $1.37 a share from the $1.38 the year before.


  CTXS's daily chart shows the stock falling from $140 in April to $113 by June.

  The stock tried to form a bottom, but now gaps lower with big volume.

Strategy Opinion: TTD  is targeting CTXS for a decline to $85 within the next few months, or sooner. A protective stop buy can be placed near $104.
